What’s in a name?

That which we call a rose by any other word would smell as sweet,
So Romeo would, were he not Romeo called,
Retain that dear perfection which he owes without that title.
Shakespeare

At The Knit Studio we see names every day, loads of them. So, what is in a name?

Here’s what we think. It’s the most precious word of all. Every expecting parent spends time deliberating their perfect word. A lot of thought, a lot of love and possibly a spirited clash of beliefs is expected before the word, that is the name, is to be agreed.

After all, this word is to be heard daily, to be abbreviated, so sing out loud.
It is said in adoration and love, to be said with tears of compassion and heartfelt care. To be yelled in caution and fear. This word that is chosen to be a name is individual, even if it is not, because when attached to a person, it becomes theirs, entirely individual.

Inspired by flowers and nature, friends and family, stories read, places visited, dreams or even famous idols, names can be found everywhere. With thousands of names from all corners of our amazing world we are always delighted with the creativity we see.

In 2021 Amelia, Isabella, Maeve, Isla, Sophie and Mila were popular for the girls. For the boys we saw Oliver continuing it’s reign with Archie not far behind. Luca, Kai and Jude were also popular. We loved seeing some traditional names coming back with Reggie (one of our favourites), Ted and Stevie making the list.

Unisex, gender neutral or non-binary baby names have become very popular. Perhaps to name baby before they’re born and keep the gender a surprise. Or simply so a name can be given to baby, regardless of gender. Some stunning names including Atlas, Jesse, Kai, River and Bailey.

We love all the names you choose. The old names, the new, the creative names, the modern and the few we have never seen before.

2022 is shaping up to be NAME-TASTIC!
